Exceptions

There are exceptions to this policy for the locations listed below:

Canada
United States
Debit Cards

Debit cards are accepted as a method of payment subject to the exceptions detailed below.

Please note, where applicable, the deposit may be taken from your account where a debit card is used as a method of payment. You must ensure that there are sufficient funds in your account to cover this cost. National Car Rental will not be responsible for any bank charges that you may incur.

Any other non-credit card without the Visa or MasterCard logo is not accepted.

Debit cards are not accepted in any South Africa, Latin American or Caribbean locations.

For renting at European locations except for the United Kingdom and France, debit cards will be accepted under the same terms as our credit card policy. Debit cards are not accepted at all in Austria, Corsica and France. Germany only accepts EC Maestro debit cards. All rentals in Spain require a credit card for deposits.

For rentals in the United Kingdom, debit cards require the following forms of identification:-

  • Photo ID Driving Licence and Counterpart OR Old style full driving licence and one of the following, confirming address: evidence of place of employment, building society deposit book/statement, TV licence, bank statement.
OR
  • Passport and one of the following: alternative credit/debit card, evidence of place of employment, building society deposit book/statement, TV licence, birth certificate, bank statement

Exceptions


Canada
When renting in Canada, debit or check cards are only accepted when returning the vehicle. A Credit Card in the name of the renter must be presented at the time of pick-up.


United States
At most U.S locations, debit cards are accepted as form of payment in U.S. locations with proof of a roundtrip ticket. Please go to www.nationalcar.com rental policies to see exception cities to this policy.
