Terms and Conditions

Cancellation Charges

We will not charge for reservations cancelled 7 days or more before your pick up time. If you cancel your booking after this time, the following charges apply:

  • If you cancel your booking less than 7 days before pick up time, you will be charged either the full cost of your booking or up to a maximum of £20 whichever is the lesser.
  • If you cancel your booking less than 24 hours before your pick up time, you will be charged either the full cost of your booking or up to a maximum of £50, whichever is the lesser.

In the event of a cancellation, your credit card will be refunded, less the above charge.

No-shows & late or early arrivals

Your vehicle will be held for 2 hours from the specified reserved time. After this time we cannot guarantee a vehicle will be available upon arrival.

For all airport bookings, however, where a flight number has been supplied the vehicle will be held until the flight has landed and cleared. Where a flight delay results in a customer arriving after the station closing time a member of staff will wait for the flight to land and clear. If the delay is in excess of one hour after the station closing time an out of hours fee may apply. Where no flight number has been supplied we will hold the vehicle for a period of up to 2 hours or until station closing time, which ever is the earlier. Staff will not wait beyond closing time where no flight number is supplied.

When booking your vehicle please ensure the dates entered are correct, if your circumstances change and you require the vehicle on different dates/times please amend your reservation online.

Customers who arrive 1 day or more early at our rental stations with a reservation that does not match the current date will not be able to use the reservation reserved online. The branch may be able to offer an alternate reservation but please note the rates will not match the online reservation.

If you fail to collect your car on the specified pick-up date, we reserve the right to charge a no-show fee of either the cost of the booking or up to a maximum of £50, whichever is the lesser. In the event of a no-show, your credit card will be refunded, less the no-show charge.

Unused Rental Days

Please note that any unused rental days on prepaid reservations are non-refundable.

Rules and regulations - check before you travel

If you are planning to drive to abroad, you will need to be aware of your responsibilities to follow driving laws in your destination country. We strongly recommend you make your own investigations before travelling.

Driving abroad in Winter conditions

Whilst driving abroad in winter conditions, legally some countries will have restrictions on the equipment a vehicle should carry or have fitted, this can include snow tyres. Whilst driving abroad its important to adhere to the driving laws in that country. Failure to do so could result in a fine or temporary loss of your vehicle. Snow tyres and snow chains are available to hire for an additional fee and must be requested at time of booking. For online bookings where the pick-up country specified requires snow tyres a charge will normally be added to your reservation and these will be fitted to the vehicle. However, if you are planning to drive cross-border please check country requirements and request equipment be added to your reservation where appropriate by contacting our Call Centre.

We strongly recommend you make your own investigations as to whether or not you will require any additional winter equipment before travelling abroad. The RAC website (www.rac.co.uk/driving-abroad) provides additional information and tips on driving abroad.

South Africa

Additional Driver Policy

The maximum number of additional drivers permitted per rental is unlimited. Additional drivers fee is ZAR 201.75 + tax per driver per rental. Rental conditions apply to all additional drivers.

Age Requirements

Minimum rental age is 18 years for all car groups. There is no maximum rental age. Young drivers surcharge is ZAR 157.89 + tax per driver per day, for drivers between 18-23 years of age.

Cross Border Policy

Prior authorisation is required for customer's wishing to cross the border. A fee of ZAR 657.89 + vat, is levied for cars travelling into Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia and Lesotho and a fee of ZAR 1228.07 + vat applies for cross border rentals into Mozambique and Zambia. Cross border travel is not permitted for the PDAR (Premium) - FDAR (Full Size) car groups into Mozambique and Zambia. Cross border travel is not permitted into Angola, Zimbabwe. Advance notice is required for cross border travel and writted authorisation must be obtained from the rental location.

Delivery / Collection

During office Hours: Only available for some locations. ZAR 219.30 + tax up to 25Kms. The charge for each additional KM is ZAR 8.77 + tax. Out of Hours: Only available for some locations. ZAR 368.42 + tax up to 25Kms. The charge for each additional KM is ZAR 8.77 + tax.

Insurance Excess

Collision Damage Waiver & Theft Waiver limits the customer’s financial responsibility for loss, damage or theft of the rental vehicle. The maximum excess that is payable in the event of one of these incidents is 9912.28 ZAR. The maximum excess will vary depending on the vehicle you are renting, please ask at time of rental for further information on which excess applies. If you would like to reduce or remove your excess responsibility please ask the rental staff when collecting your vehicle about additional products that are on offer .

License Requirements

Customers must present a full and valid driving licence which has been held for a minimum of two years. An international driving licence/permit from the customers current residence will be required for foreign customers. Should your driving license not be resident to the country of origin of your booking we reserve the right to charge an appropriate rate for your country of residence.

One Way Rentals

Domestic one ways are charged at ZAR 657.89 + tax (ZAR 750.00 inc Tax). The charge will be confirmed at time of reservation. Some domestic one ways are free of charge. Please see separate one way grid for details. One ways are available for all cars and must be pre-booked. International One ways are allowed as follows: South Africa to Swaziland = ZAR 1052.63 + tax. South Africa to Botswana = ZAR 1052.63 + tax South Africa to Namibia = ZAR 4385.96 + tax. South Africa to Lesotho = ZAR 789.47 + tax. One way drop offs are not permitted into Mozambique or Zambia. There is a minimum rental of 1 day required for all one ways (domestic and international).

Out of Hours Policy

Not permitted.

Payment Policy

All major credit cards are accepted. (American Express/Diners Club/Mastercard/Visa). Debit cards are not accepted. (Visa Delta/Switch). National vouchers are accepted. National chargecards are accepted. Travellers cheques are accepted. Eurocheques are accepted. Cash rentals are not accepted. A credit card is always required for deposits, and the deposit is held on the card until the vehicle is returned. The deposit required is the excess/deductible amount, plus 1,500 ZAR for any additional days not covered by a voucher and fuel costs.

Refuelling Policy

Alamo/National will supply you a car with a full tank of petrol. Customers must return the car with a full tank of petrol or refuelling charges will apply.

Roadside Assistance

Assistance phone number: 0861 118 898 to be called in the event of breakdown or accident. Full details will be provided to the customer upon arrival. A replacement car will be provided if necessary.

Special Equipment

Child infant seats (CSI) are available at a cost of ZAR 236.84 + tax per rental. Suitability is 0-12 months. Age must be indicated at time of booking. Child baby seats (CSB) are available at a cost of ZAR 219.30 + tax per rental. Suitability is 1-3 years. Age must be indicated at time of booking. Child toddler seats (CST) are available at a cost of ZAR 219.30 + tax per rental. Suitability is 4-7 years. Age must be indicated at time of booking. A spare tyre is available at a cost of ZAR 701.75 per rental. There is a replacement amount of ZAR 1228.07 + tax. Navigation system (NVS) is available at a cost of ZAR 69.30 plus tax per day. Mobile phones are available and the request for a mobile phone can be sent with the reservation (add to remarks) & South Africa will make arrangements with Vodaphone. Mobile Phones cannot be loaded in the system. Details as follows: - Phone & SIM Card: Daily Rental Rate: FREE, Theft Damage Protection (TDP): R 9.95 per day, Monthly Rental Rate: R249.00 per month – Including TDP - SIM Card Only: Daily Rental Rate: R 6.95 per day, Monthly Rental Rate: R189.00 per month - Call Rates: R2.40 per minute – Telkom (Landline) and Vodacom (082), R2.60 per minute – MTN (083) and Cell C (084), From R4.39 depending on the country being called, R7.90 per minute to the USA, UK, Germany, The Netherlands. - SMS/TEXT Messaging Rates: R1.00 per SMS – Local, R2.00 per SMS – International. - Excess: Excess from R500 (depending on what handset is rented) will be charged for lost, stolen or damaged handsets. Accessories are charged separately. SIM cards that are lost, stolen or damaged will cost R 150.00. Please Note: Mobile Phone Rates are quoted and billed in South African Rands and exclude tax. - Child booster seats - Not available. - Luggage racks - Not available. - Snow chains/tyres - Not available. - Ski rack/Snow box - Not available. - Winter vehicles - Not available. Baby seats (CSB) and spare tyres are not loaded in the system. if the customer requires a baby seat (CSB) or a spare tyre please add remarks on the reservation and request at the rental counter. All special equipment is permitted for one way rentals in South Africa. All special equipment is available on request, except the Navigation system (NVS) which is on freesale. All costs are excluding vat.

Surcharges

Airport surcharge - 11% + tax. Contract fee - ZAR 48.25 + tax (applies to all rentals). Tourism Levy - 1% + tax. A claim handling fee of ZAR 482.46 + tax applies in the event of damage or loss (paid locally). Traffic Fine Handling Fee - ZAR 192.98 + tax (paid locally if applicable). Vehicle Valet - ZAR 508.77 + tax (paid locally if applicable).
