A great time to visit Washington is in the spring when the famous cherry trees are all in blossom. There are almost 1,700 cherry trees lining the Washington DC's Tidal Basin and when they burst into bloom the result is stunning. The Lincoln Memorial is just one of Washington's many monuments, but it is a favourite with visitors. Anyone who has an interest in history will want to read the famous speeches etched on the walls and the design of the building is certainly impressive, but for many visitors the most atmospheric time to visit is after dark.
Washington has some fantastic museums and art galleries. The National Gallery of Art is composed of two buildings, the East Wing which contains modern works by artists such as Rothko and Matisse and the West building which contains older works by artists such as Botticelli and Monet. In the summer you can listen to jazz in the sculpture garden. The National Air and Space Museum is a treasure trove of aircraft, featuring such celebrated aircraft as Amelia Lockhart's Lockheed Vega B and Wrights Wright 1903 flyer. In addition to the many aircraft exhibits there is a planetarium and IMAX theatre.
